This Beijing winter guide brings together everything first-time visitors need to know — from winter weather and dressing tips to seasonal activities across the city.

Whether you're planning a short trip or a slower winter stay, this overview helps you understand what to expect before diving into the detailed sections below.

What Winter Is Really Like in Beijing

Beijing winters are cold, dry, and windy. Daytime temperatures usually range from -10°C to 5°C, but strong wind can make it feel colder. Snow isn’t frequent, usually 3 times per year during recent years.

How to Dress for Winter in Beijing

🧥 Beijing Winter Dressing Rule: 3–4 Layers

In winter, staying warm in Beijing is all about layering, not piling on one heavy coat.

3–4 layers usually work perfectly:

  1. Base layer: Thermal top and leggings to keep heat close to your body.

  2. Middle layer: Sweater, fleece, or light down for insulation. But If you’re spending long hours outdoors, adding a lightweight down vest!

  3. Outer layer: A windproof down jacket or padded coat — essential for Beijing’s cold wind.

  4. Accessories layer: Scarf, gloves, and a beanie for extended outdoor time.

💡 Tip: Indoor heating is strong in Beijing, so choose layers you can easily take off once inside.

Trails are quieter, the surroundings feel more open, and the pace naturally slows down. On snowy days, the landscape turns soft and quiet, with fresh snow covering the ground — calm, clean, and incredibly scenic. With proper layers, winter riding feels peaceful and immersive, offering a side of Beijing you don’t get to experience in other seasons.
